POST SURGERY TIPS

What should I expect after surgery?

Recovering from surgery largely depends on the procedure that was done. How quickly you can resume full activity also varies depending on the procedure. This may require you to depend on support from family and friends. Taking proper care of yourself after surgery will have a significant impact on your recovery. Remember that it takes time to get back to ‘normal’ life. Go easy on yourself and don’t get discouraged! Here are some tips that may help you to have easier recovery.

Ice packs could help to relieve pain, and may help to reduce inflammation as well. Ask your physicians if using ice packs can help to ease the pain.⁵

Wound healing can be delayed by presence of infection or abnormal bacterial. Washing hands or sanitizing, wearing masks and gloves are important steps and reduce the risk of infection.⁶

Sustained pressure can delay wound healing as well. Comfort devices and soft gel pads can help to redistribute pressure and help to maintain blood flow.⁷

Protein is needed for cell growth. Ask your doctor about what type of food or nutritional drinks could help with your recovery.⁸

You might also need incision management or wound care supplies, prepare these supplies ahead of time so that you don’t need to find it after surgery.

Recovery can be boring. Stock up your favorite entertainment such as books, music, or movies before your surgery.

Your physician may recommend that you increase your water and fiber intake to prevent constipation after surgery ⁹

Making your home safer after surgery

Depending on the surgery, you may need to set up your home differently to support your recovery. Ask your physician what you can or cannot do after surgery. It is important to keep your home safe and comfortable during your recovery. Here are some tips that might help you.

Bathroom

You may need safety bars and a raised toilet seat to help you get in and out of the tub, sit up and down, and get up from the toilet.

Non-slip shower or bath mats inside and outside of the tub may help to reduce the risk of falls.

A shower chair allows you to sit in the shower. Remember to choose a shower chair with non-skid rubber tips.

Bedroom

A bed pole may help you to get in and out of bed easier.

A bedside anti-slip fall mat can help to reduce risk of injury if you fall. If possible, adjust your bed to a lower height so that it’s easier for you to get in and out of bed.¹⁰

Keep your phone and a light by your bed.

Get in and out of the bed slowly to keep your balance.

If you cannot quite get out of the bed yet, a portable commode or bed pan could be an option.

Kitchen

Keep the things you will need within reach.

Try to use kettles or appliances that would turn off by themselves.

Stock your kitchen with easy-to-make meals and food or supplements with the appropriate nutrients that you need for recovery. Ask your doctor what type of nutrients or food could assist in your recovery.

Moving around

Wear anti-slip socks with grips or proper fitting shoes with good soles and ankle support.

Mobility aids such as walkers, canes, and crutches can add stability and help you move around. Choose the mobility aids that can properly support your weight and has brakes or stoppers that help to reduce the risk of skidding.

A grabber or reacher can help you pick up or reach things without bending over or reach up.

Take away any loose rugs. Secure carpets to the floor. Move electrical cords out of the way.

Make sure there are solid hand rails all the way along the staircase.
